Specific information for individual units may be found on the Rio Grande Modeling & Historical Society's SD45 page.

(1)  As-delivered small Flying Rio Grande herald.

(2) Nathan M3 airhorn.

(3) Handrails by steps painted black.  These were not painted white until the late 1970s.

(4) Early-model plow.  Note top edge is nearly horizontal; very little slope.

(5) Mars light on low nose.

(6) Drop step, and small-style anticlimber.

(7) M-U receptacle.

  • Some SD45s received the billboard-style herald as early as August 1968, when these units began being used in a run-through arrangement on unit coal trains to Kaiser Steel in California.  However, some units were never repainted before retirement from the Rio Grande (or, later, SP).
  • Notice how the grime on the pilot as been washed off in stripes, by the action of water running off the handrail stanchions.
