Ex-Conrail, Exx-Penn Central GP40s acquired by D&RGW during 1983 to meet power requirements of trackage rights to Kansas City. Features:

·         No lights on low nose

·         Gold paint color is much redder (known as KC orange)

·         Cab numerals inconsistently styled. Some are RR Roman stencils; others block numerals.

·         Numberboards of uneven quality; see below.

·         Billboard herald differs from standard, particularly in lower half of large G and the small o. Nose herald swooshes slightly elongated.

 

 

General Explanatory Remarks

Plows: styles varied over time. Many, but not all, early GP40s came with a taller, more square plow. Some of these were replaced over time.  Some units, however, had the more angular style installed from the factory.Over time most plows lost their doors. UP replaced some with their tall, square type, especially after repainting. Consult photos for a particular time period.

Horns: Nearly all D&RGW geeps were delivered with Nathan M3 horns, but some of these were replaced as a maintenance item at various times, usually with a Leslie P3 (during D&RGW era) or with other styles of 3-chime horn (under SP and UP). Consult photos for your era.

Numberboards: There is a large variety of styles that appear over time. EMD installed at least two styles—a square style I call EMD Block, and another style with rounded numerals that showed up on most new GP40-2’s as well as some of the later orders of GP40’s. Mid-America Car (MAC) created their own in a chunky serif style. These looked sloppy and were inconsistent. Burnham shops in Denver made their own style of block square lettering, very similar to EMD Block but slightly wider; these were commonly installed on rebuilds and replacements up unto circa 1995.After that, Burnham switched to an elegant Railroad Roman style that was a good match for the standard cab-side numerals.

Units receiving a complete repaint are not considered "modified" for our purposes; they cease to be D&RGW units. Ergo, ditch lights installed as part of shopping when the unit is repainted, or any other such modifications, are out of scope.
